#2 · Nov 13, 2012 Welcome to Allpar. There is a bronze bushing in the block to support the camshaft auxillary shaft that drives both the oil pump and distributor. It is a possible wear item. With the distributor out, see if this aux. shaft has play. I believe that both the bushing and shaft can be serviced without pulling the intake. Small Block, Put the engine on top dead center. Timing mark on zero , Firing or Exhaust stroke don't matter which. Install the drive gear with the distributor slot inline with the drivers side front intake bolt. This is the correct position for the gear. Everything should line up then. Top: The new slot lengths were shortened to 0.366" and the centrifugal advance would be limited to only 15° total. Bottom Left: The rectangle slots were mig welded to shorten up the slots. Bottom Right: The distributor shaft was cleaned and reassembled. The governor weights were lubed and mated to new lighter springs.
